How to choose a wedding photographer for one the most momentous day in their life. So nothing should be left out, even the wedding photographer. The bride and groom want to “preserve” the most beautiful moments and highlights of the big day in unforgettable photos. Friends and family may be the right choice, but they also want to celebrate this day with you, and at times they may not be able to handle certain situations or the demanding task of a wedding photographer.
I honestly would hate to photograph a friend’s wedding simply because I rather enjoy it; after all, I am there to help celebrate their love and marriage.
The best thing to do is to hire a professional wedding photographer who will produce unforgettable wedding photos that will meet your needs and convey who you are. But how do you find the correct one?
Professional wedding photographer usually has a portfolio, like me :). It shows photos they have created with past clients. It can give you a good feel of what to expect from your wedding as well. Keep in mind to ask yourself these questions when you are looking at their work.
- Do the wedding photos match your ideas?
- How do colors, shapes, and light looks?
- Do they convey the couple’s personality?
- Do they show emotions, if that’s what you are going after?
- Do they show creativity in the images?
- Would you print any of the images and have them hung on your wall?
Keep in mind that more established wedding photographers will have more reviews, then those who are just starting out. They should have at least five reviews, even to be considered as your wedding photographer. Check them out and see what others have said about them. See what others felt when they were working with the photographer, how did they like the images given to them, how was the photographer’s personality.
This one is my favorite simply because I can not work with all types of clients, and you should be the same. I am a keen believer that when personality matches, the experience is x10 better.
Some people are more cheerful, some are quieter, some are more laid back and easy-going, and the list can go on and on. My point is that you should find a photographer who matches you and your personality. After all, they are going to be there with you all day. Make sure you can stand their jokes or likes the way they shoot.
You can get a good feeling on how they are by either visiting their website or by talking over the phone/text message. Pay attention to how the photographer words their website, or how they respond via phone/text. You can tell a lot by just doing those two things. When I speak with my clients, I get a good feeling of how they are only by the way they talk. Being professional about everything hides who they are, and today well, this just doesn’t work anymore.
The photos captured will be out of this world when you are sympathetic to the photographer, and the chemistry between you is perfect. It won’t feel like your doing a photo session, but instead just hanging out and having a good time. Plus, your photographer will not be bored either and will also be enjoying the time photographing the wedding.
One of the most significant things on your list when you are searching for a wedding photographer. Keep in mind that the more creative they are, the more experiences they have will cost you more. It takes an enormous amount of work learning, implementing creative techniques in a fast-paced environment that’s always changing to produce fantastic images.
You will get all sorts of price ranges and what packages they offer. It’s best to select a few photographers that you like and see what works for your budget-wise. But honestly, and I know you heard the term before “you get what you pay,” and wedding photography is no different.
Do they Travel
Many wedding couples choose a special place for their big day. Some prefer a wedding abroad on the dream beach, in the mountains or another unique and distant location. Many photographers are not only available locally, but they are also available for destination weddings. It would be a lot more relaxed if you booked one locally, and took that photographer aboard. In this way, if you don’t know the local language abroad or don’t want to deal with finding one local to the destination location, you are saving your self a considerable amount of time. Just keep in mind that this may be an additional price that may not be listed on their website.
Do an Engagement Session
If you are keen on finding the perfect wedding photographer, then why not do their engagement session? That will be the best option for you to see how they work, see how the images turn out and see if you and the photographer have chemistry.
Some photographers offer the engagement session as part of their wedding package, so that won’t work for you to ably. But look for photographers providing an engagement session for free or an engagement session that’s not part of the wedding package. This way, instead of losing thousands of dollars on a wedding photographer that you didn’t get along with or hate the way the images came out, your only losing a fraction.
