How many photographers does it take for wedding coverage? The answer, in my opinion, is that you only need two good photographers. But that’s a frequent question from the brides who come to us, so I decided to write this article to help you. Let’s go to the reasons that led me to that answer.
1. There are only two of you
Unless it’s a double wedding, or polygamous (I don’t even know if it exists), you’re just two people. That way, each of you will have a personal photographer. During the party, at moments when you walk away from your partner to greet friends, one photographer will be following you, and another will be supporting your spouse. This is how I work with Krista at the weddings we photograph. She follows the bride, and I follow the groom. When the two of them are together again, she and I photograph them from different angles.
Many weddings I have photographed has different times when the bride and groom are getting ready. Most of the time, the groom started later while the bride is still getting ready. When you have only one photographer to cover both, expect things like zip-up, mom’s reaction, bridesmaid reaction missed. And yes, I have missed those moments because the bride and groom thought it would be enough to have one photographer.
2. More angles covered
Only one photographer can be in one place at a time. So your mostly likely only getting one angle covered. For the example, the image shot above I was solo shooting the wedding. Thus, I was only able to stand in the front when the bride is coming down. I couldn’t shoot the groom’s reaction because of my position.
You really can’t just pause the ceremony and wait to get in the perfect position. However, if you have two photographers; the second would be in the back. Not only getting the groom’s reaction but also the bride from the back walking down. So remember when you have only one photographer at your wedding; you will miss some shots.
3. Give your photographer time for creativity
When couples only choose one photographer for their wedding, this not only puts burden on the photographer but also the ability to miss chances for doing something creative. Some of my best creative shots came when I was working with Krista, as she would take care of some shots while I am out there setting up lighting to make some unique.
When we photographers are busy trying to make sure we got everything covered, we spend less time trying to be creative. Thus my reason why I hate a shot list too, (new blog post coming 🙂 Your only getting married once, so don’t you want something amazing to remember the day by?
4. More images!
Not only will have full images of both the bride and groom getting ready, but you will also have extra images with extra angles that show emotions captured from a different view. Despite the image being shot at the same time, another view of the same shot can mean a completely different story. If that even makes sense, but it sounded pretty cool huh?
5. When is a third photographer needed at my wedding?
Yes, despite everything I’ve said, a third photographer may be necessary. He will be needed when you have more than 300 guests and want pictures of everyone, even if you are not present. Maybe it’s interesting to have an exclusive photographer to photograph the guests at your tables since these people are there because they are unique to you.
This is especially true for Indian/Asian weddings since they have more then 300+ guest. So if your planning on having an Indian wedding, expect to at least have three photographers for coverage.
Truth is that you can totally cover a wedding with just one photographer, but expect to miss shots you may want or care about. If that’s ok then for sure go for it. But with us we offer two photographers with all packages just because we like to work stress free and create some unique photos for your wedding.
We hope this has help you better understand at how many wedding photographers you need!
